Is 12 too young for a phone + craftivity

I can't believe tomorrow is Christmas Eve! I'm glad to say I've gotten all my Christmas shopping done (I only started on Tuesday!). I'm a little nervous though... I got my son a mobile phone. He is 12 and in January will start high school. He'll be catching the bus and might be late some days because he is interested in going to the school's Homework Club so he doesn't have to bring homework home. Soooo... I thought he should have one so I know where he is and so he can contact me if he needs to. Is he too young to have one? I'd love to know what you think.

I'm also just about to list a new pack I have made on TpT. It has 20 Winter themed literacy centers and activities. It also comes with 2 craftivities and 2 student foldable booklets

So, is 12 too young for a mobile phone?  Have you experienced any problems with your kids and their phones? Bills, bullying or anything else??

  1. I think this is the perfect time to get him a mobile phone, we did the same thing last year when our kids went to high school and we new there would be times we might want to get a hold of them or them us! 12 is a good age for giving some responsibilities that make them feel a little more grown up but are also useful for you as well!

  2. I agree with Amy. As long as your son knows and follows the rules (no texting in school, keep the phone put away so it isn't taken by teachers--whatever rules you put in place), there is no problem with a cell phone. Our son played basketball and baseball. Practice and game times changed, so a cell phone was essential for him and us as we arranged our afternoons and evenings around his sports. God bless you all! Merry Christmas!

  3. Thanks Amy and Melly, I'm feeling a little better about it. He really is a very responsible boy so I don't think he'll have any problems with it. Rules will be put into place though, particularly when he goes back to school.

I hope you both have a delightful and safe Christmas!

  4. We gave our daughter a cell phone when she started Jr. High. It was for the same reasons your giving your son one. On a positive note, because of the texting feature, we heard from our daughter all the time. She even sent her grandmother random texts to say she loved her or was thinking of her. :) We never looked back.

  5. I don't think it's too young, especially since you will need to contact him. I have some kids in 2nd grade who have cell phones! Now that's crazy!

I wanted to let you know that I'm doing another givewaway for my New Year's Unit, so stop on by :) http://thelandof2ndgrade.blogspot.com/2011/12/new-years-giveaway.html

  6. My son is almost 12 and will be getting a phone next school year. He will be in middle school which is across town from the elementary building (where I am and he has been for the last 8 years!). Anyway, he has food allergies and Celiac disease and we are giving him a phone so he can contact us anytime if he has a question about his food. I trust him and I will feel better if I know he can contact me quickly if needed.

  8. My kids have had a mobile since they were 7 due to me being late sometimes and unable to contact them otehrwise. they have been great with it. Now they are both at high school and everyone has one so your son will be fine. Must say my kids have had theirs so long the novelty has worn off and I dont have to worry about huge bills. I think it is a wise decision. hope he loved it!
