B2S Classroom Photos

Phew, has this week gone by fast and been exhausting! I've had a lot of problems with getting my room set up for school that starts next week!

I went into school Monday and Tuesday to set up since Wednesday to Friday were teacher days and I'd be in meetings and PD for most of the time. We also had parents coming in to drop off school supplies Friday morning and knew that 2-4 hours on Wednesday and Thursday would NOT be enough time to set up the room!

I kept mysel busy Monday and Tuesday scrubbing the walls because they were so filthy the white walls looked a blackish colour and were covered in blu-tack. And I don't know what was wrong with the blu-tack because usually it comes off easily when you rub over it with another piece of blu-tack but all it did was smudge! So I spent quite a bit of the 2 days on my tippy toes of the top step of a step ladder trying to clean off smudgy blu-tack! I collected 3 tennis ball sized balls of blu-tack and my back ached from being down on the floor cleaning the lower walls!

Here are some before pictures. This is what my room looked like Tuesday afternoon after I'd spent two days cleaning walls and removing blu-tack.

I've mentioned my weird shaped room before. This is the actual shape of it!

I've removed the rest of the craziness that was my week.

How did your classroom preparation go this week?

  1. What a kafuffle!!! I was in every day this week, too, and STILL have a tonne of work to do. I decided to just put up enough stuff to make it presentable and I will add things as I need them. I know I will change things in the first week, anyway. I feel your pain about your weird shaped rooms! I don't know WHO designed our classrooms but they pretty much have zero wall space to do any displays. I have an IWB too, which meant they took my whiteboard away so I don't have one. Only the IWB. *sigh* The joys of 'back to school'!!!

    1. It sure was a kafuffle! You've just got to work around it though! I'm glad I'm not the only one who has tonned of work left to do! Lack of wall space is the worst! Obviously teachers didn't design the rooms!

  2. Oh Kylie, what a disaster. Good luck for back to school :) We are back on Tuesday for a PD day then the kids start on Wednesday except for our Kinders. They all have a 1 hour assessment sometime between Wed-Fri and then start on Monday.

    1. Hi Brooke! A little of a disaster but there was nothing much I could do so I didn't stress too much. Not having everything out and ready to go just means that when I want to use something either I won't have it or I'll have to dig through boxes to find it! Ah well, things could be worse! How are you going with your set-up?

  3. Cleaning, moving furniture, throwing other people's left behind stuff takes a huge amount of our time even before we can start on what we want our room to look like. I hear you about an odd shaped room. Our Prep team came in together as we have a shared space for the four of us, new space this year, but was the library. I conned my husband into coming in and helping move stuff and clean up our new art/craft space. Somehow we always get things ready.

    1. Paula, you've hit the nail on the head! Cleaning up messes left by others takes up way too much time! I just think it's common courtesy to leave the room clean. There was still name labels on shelves in my room, the shelves had dried spills down them and were covered in dirt and dust, the whiteboard and IWB were black from not being cleaned for who knows how long and of course the walls and carpet were just disgusting. The chairs and tidy trays were yuk as well. I need to get me a husband to help me, know of anyone? Haha! I really look forward to seeing how things go with a shared space with 3 other classes - wholly molly!

  4. My oh my!!! I feel for you Kylie. A couple of years ago I moved into a classroom where the previous teacher had retired. She just took what she wanted and left everything else to me!! She thought I might find it useful. It took me a week to clean. My hubby had to come and help me because there was SO much stuff. I filled up a skip bin and was still throwing stuff out all year!
I had enough of my own stuff without inheriting more.

I can never understand why the carpet cleaning is left to do just before we go back to school.
Your room looks interesting. Is it a new building?

    Try to... Keep smiling!

    1. Hi Rhonda, my mess sounds nothing compared to what you went through a couple of years ago! Yikes! My school is only about 7 or 8 years old so it's not very old at all. I feel very blessed to have such a beautiful school (the school itself is beautiful, it was just my new classroom that was left in such a mess).

  5. Oh, Kylie! There's always 'something' happening, that throws everything else out. And, like Rhonda, I can't understand why the carpets aren't cleaned until right before the start of term (they can't possibly get dirty with no-one trampling!). I only went in on Friday, spent a whole day moving furniture and cleaning walls and making my room presentable. (I'm ignoring the organisational stuff I have to do with resources/etc - I have zero storage anywhere, which drives me nuts - and... *gulp* filing *gulp*.)

But, we do the best we can with what we have, don't we?

    Keep up the positive attitude!

    1. I know, you'd think the carpets would be cleaned straight after school is our at the end of December! Like you, I think the organisational stuff will have to wait - don't even get me started on filing! I really need a new system to keep up with that during the year! I hope everything goes well with your kids when they return!

  6. What a massive week! It's such a pain when you have to waste lots of time cleaning etc when all you really want to do is set up and plan! Your room looks really interesting, I'm sure you will turn it into something special, even if its not complete by Tuesday morning. We've kind of been told (indirectly) that we can't come in over the long weekend, so I understand about not getting everything done in time.... My rooms presentable but I would have liked to have done more!
Best of luck for your first week back..... I'm sure it'll go fabulously :)

    1. Hi Jess, I can't wait to see photos of your classroom! Are you thinking of putting some up? Yes, the shape of mine is very 'interesting'! The people who designed it make it look nice with the coloured walls etc, but I don't know what they were thinking with the shape!

All the best for next week!

  7. Good luck with Back to School Kylie! I love the colours of your walls, they look so bright.
I once went in to my Prep classroom to set up and found water flowing out from under the door! My new teaching partner had gone in the day before and had done some painting, gone to clean the brushes etc, put the plug in the sink but found the water had been turned off so left everything there including the plug in and tap turned on! When the water came back on it just flooded everything and flowed into my room across the carpet, into my office and onto some of my resources etc. Needless to say she was mortified, it took 3 days of having fans blowing under my carpet to dry it out and it smelled for days! Oh well, we all make mistakes and in the end my lino area was so shiny!
Hope the rest of your set up goes well :)

    1. Tania, I would have to say the walls are my favourite part of the room! They add so much brightness and colour and the choice of colours fits in with the colours I use in my room anyway. You poor thing, what a disaster! I can't imagine how you (and your teaching partner) felt, that would have been one stressful time!
